2024 mechanical properties vary significantly by temper. Choose the right temper for your load and formability requirements.
| Temper | Condition | Tensile Strength (MPa) | Yield Strength (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HB) | Formability | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-O | Annealed (fully soft) | 140 – 210 | ≤ 97 | 10 – 25 | 47 | Excellent | Complex forming before heat treatment |
| 2024-T3 | Solution treated, cold worked, naturally aged | 400 – 430 | 270 – 280 | 10 – 15 | 120 | Moderate | Aircraft skins, high-stress structural parts |
| 2024-T4 | Solution treated, naturally aged | 400 – 470 | 280 – 324 | 14 – 20 | 120 | Moderate | General aerospace components, fittings |
| 2024-T351 | Solution treated, stress-relieved by stretching, naturally aged | ≥ 470 | ≥ 280 | ≥ 20 | 120 | Moderate | Aircraft wing spars, fuselage frames, bulkheads |
| 2024-T851 | Solution treated, stress-relieved by stretching, artificially aged | ≥ 455 | ≥ 400 | ≥ 6 | 128 | Low | High-stress machined parts, gears, shafts |
Annealed at ~413°C to produce the softest, most formable condition. Low strength but excellent ductility — ideal for complex forming and bending operations. Can be subsequently heat-treated to T3 or T4 after forming for strength recovery.
Solution treated at ~495°C, quenched, cold worked for stress relief, and naturally aged at room temperature. The most widely used temper for aircraft sheet and structural components — delivers high strength with good ductility.
Solution treated and naturally aged to a stable condition at room temperature (typically 4–5 days). Offers a balanced combination of strength and elongation — higher elongation than T3 with comparable tensile properties.
Solution treated, stress-relieved by controlled stretching (1.5–3% permanent set), then naturally aged. The stress-relieving step minimizes distortion during machining — the preferred temper for thick-section bars and precision-machined aerospace parts.
Solution treated, stress-relieved by stretching, then artificially aged at elevated temperature (~190°C). Produces the highest yield strength with reduced ductility. Ideal for high-stress gears, shafts, and fasteners where dimensional stability is critical.
2024 aluminum bar is trusted across aerospace, defense, automotive, and precision engineering sectors worldwide.
